THE ROMAN LEE SERIES
"BENEATH DEVIL'S LAKE"
“Just trying to make a few bucks. If you haven’t noticed the job market for
ex-cons isn’t exactly ripe with opportunity.”
“Can’t argue that.”
“Just thought this would be the last place I would
find you given your current situation.”
“I’m just bartending nothing more. Straight cash and tips.”
He was becoming agitated rather quickly. The noise in the club was deafening not
making things any better.
“Smart money would say that you should want to maybe
not hang out here until things get settled.”
“I’m a grown fucking man. I can make my own decisions.”
A heavy hand was placed on my shoulder. I followed it to the owner. A thick muscular
male in his thirties’ staring at me. His
body language indicated impending confrontation. A premature receding hairline
and some remaining acne indicated he was probably still on steroids.
“You really should remove that hand.”
“Dah?”
“His accent.
Imported help.”
“Hugo, it’s ok their brothers.”
Vladi Razin motioned for Hugo to heel. Still staring at me like he wanted to go he
slowly removed his hand. I jumped off
the bar stool looking him in the eye. We
were of similar height and weight.
“Hugo, I have severe intimacy issues. Might want to rethink that gesture next time for
your personal safety”
I shook Vladi’s outstretched hand.
“Roman, what brings you to the club?”
“Somewhere we can talk?”
“My office.
This way Roman.”
I could sense Hugo following me with his eyes. His stare attempting to incinerate me.
Vladi gave my brother Micah a look he recognized. Handing him a bottle of 1800 and two glasses
he wiped off the counter and attended to a customer.
“Roman, I have to apologize for Hugo’s behavior. Security is trained to respond to the slightest
provocation. My brother and I value the
safety of our customers.
