The Roman Lee Series "Beneath Devil's Lake" ..... Teasing the Devil......

THE ROMAN LEE SERIES

"BENEATH DEVIL'S LAKE"

Ned returned silently in the moonless night to discover his interior light was on.  It was impossible He shut the door and buckled her in before leaving.  The passenger door was open and she was gone!  How could this have happened? He had perfected the paralyzing cocktail.  It had never failed him.  He couldn't turn his lights on to search for her that would attract attention.  She could not have gotten far. Patience he had to wait.  He listened as the night breeze skimmed over the Lakes surface teasing the Devil as it was the only element that was ever free of its grasp.  There were no human sounds of distress.  The air was cold so he sat in his car with the windows down and the heat on so he could still hear. Alexis was freezing and her clothes were soaked in wet mud.  She was trembling with fear and the onset of hypothermia not sure what to do next. There wasn't a single bit of light and she couldn't see anything.  She was lucky to make out the edge of the bushes when the interior lights were on.  A high-pitched sneeze left her body involuntarily.  Ned turned off the ignition.  He could have sworn he heard something.  He got out and walked around the car and stooped down to look under it.  A fluorescent yellow band glowing a few yards away.  He smiled to himself as he had put his bracelet away in the glove box before grabbing the syringe in the parking lot.
He started the car back up and turned around and exited the area near the lake.
Alexis listened as the car left. The crunching of the gravel underneath its tires slowly fading away.  The effects of the injection now nearly gone had been replaced with cramping as she had remained absolutely still in her place of concealment for what seemed like an eternity.  She had to find help and fast.  Who was this psycho and where was Max if he had his car?  She crawled out of from under the bushes.  Savagely she was pulled up from the ground by the back of her hair.  Ned quickly zipped tied her hands and then her ankles.  He gagged her and through over his shoulder and marched toward the car.  He opened the trunk and set her inside. The smell inside the cramped space was awful and offensive to the senses.  It smelled like animal urine and formaldehyde from her eighth-grade biology class.  As disoriented as Alexis was during the bumpy ride to the smooth street surface she was trying to figure out direction and speed along with the number of right and left turns.  She wanted an idea of her location if she had another opportunity to escape.
