❄️ The Pulse Before the Storm — Read the Prologue of Pulse (Free)

Some destinies start with applause. Olivia Streeter’s starts with a countdown. On snow-slicked tracks in Breckenridge, a rifle at her back and the Olympics in reach, she discovers that victory carries a different kind of weight—the kind that pulls you into danger you never trained for.

The Prologue of Pulse is pure velocity: cold air, steady breath, the precision of a born marksman. But beneath the triumph is a low hum of dread—the feeling that this is only the first shot in a much larger war.

PROLOGUE

Breckenridge, Colorado - Final Qualification Rounds

Olivia "Liv" Streeter felt the weight of the .22-caliber rifle snug against her back as she pushed off the starting line. There was no room for error. The digital clock next to the scoreboard started its merciless count the instant she moved, and every millisecond would matter.

Her skis sliced through the freshly groomed snow, creating a soft, rhythmic swish that was drowned out by her own focused breathing. With each powerful thrust of her poles, she carved her path through the winding course, a trail of white powder lifting in her wake. Her father's words echoed in her mind—she had the eyes of a hawk and the calm of a mountain lake. Now was the time to prove it.

As she approached the shooting range, her gloved hands left the ski poles and went for the rifle. She dropped into the prone position with practiced ease and aimed downrange. Her fingers delicately squeezed the trigger—pop, pop, pop. Each pull was a precise dance of mechanics and instinct, sending .22-caliber rounds flying toward their distant targets. Five targets, five hits. She was back on her feet and skiing before the echo of the last shot had faded.

The crowd was a blur, their cheers a distant roar. Only the finish line mattered now. Her eyes flicked to the electronic scoreboard. The clock was her adversary, ticking down the final seconds. With a surge of adrenaline-fueled strength, Liv crossed the line just as the clock froze. She had made it—by the narrowest of margins.

Later, as Liv caught her breath in the privacy of her hotel room, her phone buzzed to life. The message was clear and succinct—an official invitation to join the U.S. Olympic Biathlon Team in Colorado Springs. Her eyes welled with tears of joy and disbelief; her dreams were within reach. And yet, as she looked at her reflection holding the invitation, she couldn't shake the feeling that life had something far more complex in store for her.

It was an intuition she couldn’t shake. Though Liv Streeter had just qualified for the Winter Olympics, this was merely the beginning of a journey that would test not just her athletic prowess, but her very survival.

She could feel it—a pulse of destiny that would soon pull her into realms she never imagined.

Hooked on Olivia’s opening shot? The real danger is still ahead.
